NEXT EVENT: SEMINAR ON "CREW WELFARE" AT MUMBAI IN SEPTEMBER

SEMINAR OF "CREW WELFARE"

Background to the Seminar

What is Crew Welfare?

  • Crew welfare encompasses all aspects of a seafarer's well-being, including their physical, mental, and emotional health.
  • It involves ensuring safe working conditions, adequate rest, nutritious food, access to medical care, and opportunities for recreation and communication.
  • The IMO (International Maritime Organization) emphasizes the importance of crew welfare, stating that "Without shipping, there's no shopping".

Why is Crew Welfare Important?

  • Seafarers are the backbone of the global shipping industry, transporting goods and fuels that are essential for the world economy.
  • Ensuring their welfare is crucial for the integrity of the maritime industry and global supply chains.
  • A well-cared-for crew is more productive, engaged, and likely to stay in the industry.

Challenges to Crew Welfare:

  • Extended contracts and fatigue: The pandemic led to many seafarers working extended contracts, causing stress and fatigue.
  • Workforce and skills shortages: The industry is facing a shortage of qualified seafarers, which can lead to increased workloads and stress.
  • Geopolitical events and climate change: These factors can exacerbate challenges to crew welfare, such as piracy, environmental hazards, and disruptions to supply chains.
  • Mental health: Seafarers often face isolation and stress while at sea, which can impact their mental health.
  • Lack of access to shore leave: Restricted shore leave can contribute to feelings of isolation and frustration.

What can be done to improve crew welfare?
